On February 1, 2014, Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum opened its doors to the exhibit “Marcel Wanders: Pinned Up at the Stedelijk – 25 Years of Design.” It is the largest-ever presentation of the internationally renowned designer’s work. Marcel is one of the  most distinguished designers, in fields ranging from art direction to product, furniture and interior design.

Royal Contract Lighting was commissioned to produce the bell chandeliers for Marcel’s first hotel outside of the Netherlands: the Mondrian South Beach.

Conceived by Marcel as a surrealist homage to Sleeping Beauty’s castle, Mondrian is a modern fantasy. Three of our enormous chandeliers sway over the port cochere, offering perfect lighting for arriving guests.

The snow-white lobby has an ethereal quality with its floating black laser-cut staircase, giant lacquered columns resembling chair legs, and our glittering crystal chandeliers encased in oversize brass bells.

Marcel’s ingenious design vision is evident throughout in the furnishings, wall treatments, flooring and outdoor spaces. A labyrinth of lush gardens surrounds the glamorous outdoor bar, private cabanas are surrounded with curtains of living foliage, and restaurant guests dine at a grand 20 foot long table in the hotel’s brasserie.

The overall effect is like being part of a fairy tale  – a fairy tale written by Marcel Wanders.
